Kaigan, Knight of the Sands. by Mana-Ramp-Matoran Kaigan, Knight of the Sands. by Mana-Ramp-Matoran
"You want my water? Then come take them from me."
~Kaigan, Knight of the Sands.

When every scrub and waste of carbon wants to kill you for a few ounces of water or a couple scraps of food...Life is hard. Despite the harshness of the desert, Kaigan manages to get by. No one really knows what he's doing, or even what his motivations are. He has been known to take odd jobs for just enough money to afford essentials. He doesn't seem too interested in what the work is, he's not afraid to hurt people, so long as he thinks they deserve it. He doesn't seem to favorable of authorities either though. Kaigan is one of those mysteries of the desert. He comes and goes from various fueling stations and oases. The man is the living embodiment of a sand storm, harsh, unyielding, he comes, then he's gone again until he blows in again.

About The MOC
I wanted to use some of the new parts I got from all my Star Wars buildable figures I recently got. This was just gonna be a quick simple MOC to shake off the rust, but it turned out a lot better than I thought it was going to. The initial inspiration came from seeing Rey's head piece and thinking "wow those goggles would make great eyes" I thought I could pull some shenanigans to incorporate more parts around it, maybe to give it a monster mouth or something. I didn't quite manage that, but I liked this result, the rest of the MOC came afterwards.

The cover of his face is a short minifig cape, and his bag is made out of this duplo part. His bag contains a water bottle and some can of food, probably Chili, he likes Chili. On the strap is a radio/transmitter and a flashlight that clips onto it.

Thanks. :D Though "God tier" is drastically overstating it I think. This was done in like a day just out of boredom. God tier is that stupid Mech I'm working on that I can't get right. If that ever gets done I'd say that'd be "god tier" but it also took a ton of effort and some Bricklink orders to get done to. :P All the same I appreciate the compliment, thank you.

The fact that you made it out of boredom makes it even more impressive! Sorry I'm just a huge sucker for usage of parts like Rey's head here.

Gotta give props for finding a way to use the Rey head on a MOC that still looks different.

Thanks. Yeah it came to me instantly once I had the part in hand. "Cover up her face and the goggles could actually be the eyes." And then it was just a matter of figuring that out.

I wouldn't know where to begin with something like that. I'm not a very good writer. I'm open to ideas or collaborating though. I'm just not a writer. I need classes or training or something cause I hate my writing, otherwise I'd have already written a book about my main character, Matteo.

Now seriously, long time without a new MOC from you! I think... Since... Easter? Man I was missing your style around <3

I have mixed feelings with this one. First of all, the head is brilliant, probably no one had the idea of using Rey's head covering the face (or if they did, at least I haven't seeing any try yet), and I'm quite glad that you decided to go with a custom, original design instead of just covering the face with a tire (something I'll definetely try in the future). Secondly, I love the use of parts here, not only the head and the clothing but those cylinder parts and the Phasma chestplate. I find those chestplace so big and detailed that I haven't manage to find an use for one yet. The accesories are great, love the bad and the handle of the sword the most. <3 Also really like the feet stabilizers, for some reason.
But my problem here goes with the color scheme... Is a very good one, actually, but the parts available in that shade of brown are, as far as I know, quite limited and very specific, so using them properly is a pain. I think you managed quite well with the legs (though that socket at the side feels a bit out of place, being honest), but the arms definetely need a rework, at least the upper part. The cylinder part looks really weird there and, despise I like the angled connectors appearance, I don't feel like they match the MOC. Maybe a few small chains connected to those open connectors could help a bit.

And those details are the reasons of my mixed feelings. Overall is a great concept, using challenging designs, parts and color scheme, and considering how well you managed to beat that challenge I can't do less than liking the MOC... But the socket on the legs and the upper arms bug me enough for doubting to admit a master work here, dear. =S
It's still a good work, dear, if that's enough =P

P.S: dunno if you did it in purpose but Kaigan is also Japanese for coast.

Has quite a Mad Max feel to it, I like how you used the head from Rey, too bad the goggles part wasn't something that could be moved otherwise it would be easier to use that piece.

Thanks Matt. I know right? I wanted to be able to use those goggles to. Like if they had made them a rubbery type piece that could be squeezed over heads.

It's my understanding that "Kaigan" in Japanese effectively means "eye-opening" which is the last thing you want happening in a sandstorm.

Very interesting MOC. (I found a pun: "shake off the rust" and he looks kind of rusty)

Great use of Rey's headpiece!

The foot connection with the Mixel joints and the Hordika neck is very original; seems very strong, and looks cool too.

I'm just looking at his lower thigh, and the only thing holding his lower thigh to the upper thigh is two grey plus pins that fit through circle holes in the Inika shoulder armor. Does he sway a bit in that area?

The only weakness I found with his colorscheme is that with the cape off, the brown on his legs and feet stand out a bit, because it's nowhere else on him.

Excellent MOC! Keep up the great work!

Haha yeah. I thought that to. That burnt orange color does look like rust.

Thanks.

It is pretty stable He just needs some kind of piece on his back ankle to give just a bit more surface area though. he likes to tip back fairly easily. I first tried something like this on maristela. I didn't like it there cause it cluttered up what was supposed to be a bare and natural looking leg. Here it works though cause he's all armored up and has a kind of technical look to him.

Its pretty stable yeah. The brown connectors wiggle a little bit but nothing so terrible that it messes with his stability, especially considering that both legs cancel that out. If it was back and forth then yeah, but its side to side so it's moot.

Yeah I know what you mean. There's some more brown up in his torso It's hard to see but it's there. It was just kinda a filler since I didn't have the parts in other colors to go there. And I figured that for a guy who spends all his time out in the dirt, he could have a few shades of brown on him. :P He's not super polished and smooth like a lot of MOCs are. That was kinda the idea behind him, he's rough around the edges.

This is really cool! It reminds me of a mixture between a Wastelander, from Jak 3, and Bane. Well done.

Yeah that was kinda the idea. Wastelander, Fallout, Borderlands, maybe even some Mad Max. And especially Dune. I think Dune had the biggest part to play in the whole "sci fi desert punk" aesthetic. So you're pretty much on the mark. Bane not so much I mean I noticed it, but its not really the main inspiration there.

Thanks for the comment. :D

I've never been one to worry about it. Lego has forsaken the color neutral pins, we have to deal with red and blue and tan and now yellow. I just grab blue pins because it's what's most available. If I really wanted to worry about it like I do with Matteo, I'd dip into my collection of black friction pins, But this MOC isn't important enough for that.

Again, thanks. I was going a "Star wars but medieval" vibe with him. Like replace Light sabers with broad swords and maybe not as many laser guns and more brutality that's what I think this world would end up looking like.

Yea, I can definitely picture this world to be that way, though I feel there would be at least some type of Light Saber around. Like making a Light Saber that has a Custom hilt, perhaps a legend would follow? I am a star wars fans so just want to put my opinion :) , There has been stories of a ruler that used a sword unlike anything you ever seen, some say that a god dressed in a cloak (brown, jedi. Black, sith) gave the weapon to the ruler. For many years the ruler slayed his enemies like butter but then the ruler vanished. the kingdom was swallowed by the sand, lost within the desert. Whoever finds the kingdom and posses the weapon would be a deadly foe indeed.

Sorry for the rambling just got into the rhythm of things. I am curious, this is a world that has some electronics yet still in medieval era so I wonder if there is mystical creatures and magic.
