Bionicle MOC: Vegas the Grizzled Veteran by Mana-Ramp-Matoran Bionicle MOC: Vegas the Grizzled Veteran by Mana-Ramp-Matoran
About The MOC
Vegas is a MOC that came out of nowhere as I was experimenting with parts for a different project. He only took a about two hours to make plus some extra time the next day fiddling with his accessories. In that regard I quite like him, he feels like a sketch or doodle a 2D artist might do and out of thin air comes a new character or concept design. He very much feels that way to me.

The inspiration for the MOC came from when I flipped the Star Wars torso piece upside down and noticed how it makes a pretty convincing belly or gut. So I ran with that. The head selection was sort of the next natural development and is what lead to the design of the rest of the character. He has a metallic arm and leg which were probably blown off in whatever war or one of the many battles he's fought in.

I have decided that he hails from the same world as Kaigan, Kaigan, Knight of the Sands. by Mana-Ramp-Matoran

Bio
Vegas is a rather resilient and persistent fellow. Once a formidable fighter, he has long since retired as a militant and now runs a mechanic shop located in one of the more traveled to outposts in the great desert. While he never goes looking for trouble, in the desert trouble tends to blow in as often as a sand storm, when it does inevitably find him, he prides himself on having the tools, knowledge and sheer grit to handle the situation. He isn't the tallest in stature, his strength isn't what it used to be, and while he's not the smartest tool in the box, he's no fool. Vegas has a keen eye for details and is generally a pretty good shot with his side arm. His company isn't for the faint of heart, his shop is often filled with much foul language and perverse discussion among his other shop hands. He's quite fond of drinking to and can be found at the local watering hole fraternizing with the other local mechanics(and usually insulting them to). Vegas isn't the greatest mechanic, in fact he's not even particularly good, but as one of the few in the oasis who can be trusted to do honest work, he ekes out a living repairing various things, vehicles, Air cooler units, anything that breaks down really.

Any idea of why this doesn't appear on my Notificacion board? =(

It's quite unusual for you to build this kind of MOC, going usually for small creatures and titanic beasts, but you have proved to be quite good in the middle term with this guy, dear. I really like the shaping that you got with this MOC, specially with the use of the Jango Fett and Brain Attack chestplates, those look phenomenal. The detailing adds it a lot more of character (love the belt attachment, very intelligent) and I think that the use of Vardy's head is great here, giving him the grumpy, tired look of someone in his wasterland situation. =P My only complain would be the fingers, never liked the open clips at the points... Though maybe putting small claws there would extend the length of them too much. It's a mininal, personal detail; I like this guy overall quite a lot.

Nice work, dear! <3

Thank you for your feedback Lianyu.

I don't see why you say that. I've built plenty of "normal sized" figures.
Kaigan, Knight of the Sands. by Mana-Ramp-Matoran   Bionicle MOC: Kalikiki 2.0(a Kaiba Gal character) by Mana-Ramp-Matoran   Bionicle MOC: Howling Knight by Mana-Ramp-Matoran   Bionicle MOC: Sir Richard Alastair by Mana-Ramp-Matoran   Bionicle MOC: Cog by Mana-Ramp-Matoran

Vegas isn't even my first short chubby fella either, that'd be Cog. The Flipped Star Wars torso is what inspired the whole build. Then I was fiddling around with heads and I thought Vardy looked good, and that became the MOC. I filled the rest in as I went on.

I agree about the hands I don't like open clips at the ends either, but unless you stick the claws in the clips facing outward they don't look good, and I didn't really want to give him claws. I felt that made him look too evil or menacing, and I didn't want that. I don't want him to look evil or scary, but just kind of grouchy or tough. I'm also not totally happy with the chest pieces on his upper arms, but I didn't have any other dark tan armor parts. I had to use use what I had.

With the sole exception of the Plague Doctors I find those really big for my standards (medium-like MOCs for me are around the Inika size). Or at least I have that impression from the pictures, maybe Howling Knight it's actually smaller than expected...
Even counting those other three, it's a total of 5 of more than 50 creations, so... Though, well, I remember a few more that I have forgotten at the time of the comment, like 5PR1NT3R or Benji. =P

I figured there was a reason. I honestly can't get why people use those arms with no claws, unless you deliberately go for "hands at the end of the fingers" they look horrible. At least, for me, well.
Oh, I think they work nicely. Maybe a sticker as a tatoo would help, dear?

Ah okay. Well I think the definition of a "normal" sized figure has gotten larger as the sets did. A 2015 toa or later Hero Factory figure was larger than the Inika builds. So I'm basing my comparisons off that.

You're definitely right about the amount of larger MOCs I make. My comfort level is definitely on the larger scale. But I like to make sure I can work in all scales. That's why I did the MiniMOCs. That was more to prove to myself that I can build small cuite things if I want to. I want to be the kind of builder who can build anything.

Agreed, they do look like little hands at the end of fingers. :XD:
I just didn't like the shape of the chest armor. I would like maybe a longer standard armor piece in dark tan. I'll need to look at the recent Star Wars sets, but I don't know if they have the 6 length armor in tan yet.

Well, I tend to go with the 2006-2007 standards, but they are more orientative than anything.

Oh, don't get me wrong, dear, I never said you can't work on any other scale, you have proven to be quite handful in every size. =P It's just unusual, in the same way I don't tend to work on titan size despise having a few models around (not as detailed or part-consuming as most titans can be, but...) or I prefer to work with System more than Technic or CCBS in the opposite of you, though we both have good MOCs in each category.

Aren't those the ones that came with Grievous and Rey? Anyways, here you can see the current available tan HF shells..

I didn't get the full sets. I went on Bricklink, created a wanted list of the unique to those sets elements, then found the store that had the most of them. I don't have all the unique parts to those sets but I got a good deal of them. The rest is just armor and bone parts that can be got from anywhere, so I didn't see the need in buying the full sets. I saved myself quite a bit of Money I'd imagine.

Yeah, I'd imagine that it'd cost you a hell of a lot of money. But, well, piecing together the sets ain't a fast proess, and time is always money.

I've seen stores that had the sets, but the mark up based on the exchange rate+shipping made them prohibitively expensive.

I very much like the 'bloated' aesthetic. And that tool belt is a neat detail as well as cleverly attached. Glad to see the wrench included :D There's a lot of character, like how the right leg is angled suggests that his walk is a bit limpy and he probably grunts a good bit for it, but nonetheless is a helpful chap. =)

Thanks Jesse. :D

The tool belt ended up as a result of your suggestion.

The idea behind the leg was that there wasn't a properly fitting leg so they threw that one on. I intentionally made his prosthetic leg longer or rather his actual leg shorter. This also lead to the position on the tool belt to. I imagined that maybe because his prosthetics aren't the best, he maybe doesn't have the best feeling in his arm and leg so he favors all his tools on his organic side. That also means that he would face with his prosthetic side out more since that's the least vulnerable part. Its not so much that he's gimpy, as that his leg isn't the right size, so he has a weird stride that does make it a bit more difficult for him to walk.

:XD: You basically just described the story of Magic The Gathering's set "Battle For Zendikar."

I know you don't play magic, but you might like the story. magic.wizards.com/en/articles/… Aether Revolt just wrapped up and we're about to go to an Ancient Egyptian themed plane next. The link I gave you goes back quite a few sets and each set has several stories, so there's plenty of reading there if you're wanting some new entertainment while you're on the can. :XD:

Very cool design.

Vegas seems like the kind of person that can seem pretty crude until you get to know him.
Then he becomes that funny, kindhearted person that sports a loud, booming laughter.

Awww thank you.

That was exactly what I was going for with his personality. Not really a booming laugh, he's a vulture dude so his voice is pretty raspy higher pitched, but yes, very hearty once you've gotten past his crude humor and mannerisms.

And is his right arm and leg a robotic prosthetic?
I bet thats a bit of a inspiration from John Silver in the movie Treasure Planet.

The robot arm and leg doesn't come from any one source of inspiration. But more the general concept of robot limb prosthetics.
