Bionicle MOC: Valtias, The Blizzard Tyrant by Mana-Ramp-Matoran Bionicle MOC: Valtias, The Blizzard Tyrant by Mana-Ramp-Matoran
About The MOC

WHOO Finally got this MOC done! This is a MOC of "Finally's." Finally built an ice themed MOC, finally used the technique where I used netting with parts for hair, finally got THIS hand design in a MOC(for the most part). Finally build the rest of the MOC to go with that head design that I've had lying around for months. Finally built an antagonist for Bionicle MOC: Paleltuma Battledwarf. Bionicle MOC: Paleltuma Battledwarf by Mana-Ramp-Matoran
This MOC was a long time coming, its been waiting in the wings as just a head design for months, and as a concept for years. I've always wanted to build some kind of ice titan/frost giant, but never had that many of the "icy" parts from Bionicle to make that work, but with Hero Factory and Chima contributing to that aesthetic, I finally had enough to work with.
The head was the initial spark of the build, but I could have gone with a smaller build. While tinkering around I came up with the central part of the chest that uses the Straxx armor and that's when I knew it was going to be a large build, and therefore filled out the head more. The rest just came along as I built him up. That chest was a nightmare to build shoulders around and as a result he's got probably the worst shoulder articulation ever.
However he's quite limber everywhere else, including having pretty good torso/waist articulation. And ironically he's super stable on carpet because he can dig in his toes, but on the surface of the backdrop he kept sliding around, which meant I couldn't get as dynamic of a pose as I was able to playing around with him in the Office(where I build my MOCs). If he has traction, he's actually pretty stable.

"Valtias" is Finnish for "Lord." After using the Finnish word Paleltuma which means "Frostbite" for my ice dwarf, I wanted to motif that yet again by using another Finnish word for this character since he is the antagonist to Paleltuma. Its good to have friends who live in other parts of the world who can share their culture and give unique ideas. Thanks Monarth for your help with both characters. ;)

Bio
Valtias is a brutal king of various mountainous dwelling tribes. The majority of them are Ice Dwarves like Paleltuma, but he also rules over other Ice Trolls like himself. While he is a powerful being who can use brute force to inflict his will, Valtias rules mostly through fear and intimidation. Being quite sadistic, he has been known to do the dirty work that being a tyrannical ruler requires himself. He very much enjoys getting his hands dirty, which doesn't bother his servants at all. Most of his subjects are too afraid of him to defy his horrible treatment, but there has been one who has risen against him. Only time will tell what the outcome of this defiance will be...

Thanks dude. I'm glad you like him. Which MOCing site was it? I think a few might have featured it that I don't follow, cause he made it onto the big two(The Brothers Brick and Bricknerd), and I think maybe some smaller sites may have followed to. I just wanna make sure I didn't miss one. Its happened before where a site featured a MOC of mine but didn't notify me, so I felt bad noticing it like months later.

I'm pretty sure that I'll forget to comment later so I'll do it now.

Truly an impressive, massive build here. Getting this kid of titanic MOCs relying only in two colors that are not that common like black or dark grey it's pretty hard, but you have achieved a really good work here (though, well, those silver parts feel quite out of place... I get you were going for the armor appearance but since they are so located...). I absolutely love the work on the torso, the use of so many spiky parts with his proportions make them look like frosty fur. The head also look really great, liking how the mane gives a sensation of continuation with the body but it's still quite poseable. A nice detail I have to mention too are the toes, not too many MOCers tend to give them to humanoid builds and I think you made a good choice going for them instead of boots (also, the decision of making the big toe different). The only thing that bugs me is the placement of storage for the axes... They look a bit weird there, but that's truly a nitpick xD

As usual, wonderful work, dear. Though this time quite more impressive ;3

Thanks Lianyu for another in depth comment. I always appreciate your feedback.

There's a decent amount of both greys and black internally. Some parts just don't come in other colors. However white is a very common color to, so I can't say it was hard. I have a bunch of white still even after this build. If I wanted to be able to use all the icy style parts, i had to use silver since some of them are blue icy parts mixed in with silver. But yes I did try to strategically place it where I felt it would work.

I went with toes and a barefoot look because I wanted him to look very primal and more beast like. This was also why I didn't put a ton of armor on him. I get what you're saying about the axe storage. With the way he moved, I just couldn't find a method I liked. I tried giving him a belt that he'd just slide the handle between like what actual Vikings did with their axes, but that didn't work out. it was too bulky and clunky looking, so I opted for this. I figured it looked more ornate when he wasn't holding his axes, they dangled from his waist like some kind of icy garb. Its funny, I thought the same thought about how his chest looked more like fur. he does look like quite the furry guy if that was fur. Its not though, so a hug from him might actually hurt. :XD:

All in all a very inspired and detailed moc, and very good looking, but there is something that's a little off putting. The shoulders seem really low on the torso, as if its arms are coming out of its ribcage. This shows mostly in the main picture. But to go along with the low shoulders, the length of the arms also seem to hang too low, as if they are proportioned to being attached to the body up higher.

That's just the pose he's in. The top of the shoulders are built up more to make him look beefier and filled out. But his arms definitely aren't coming out of his ribs. The ribs are the more opened up part underneath the Straxx armor. You should probably go look at the pictures on Flickr, they're much more high res, and also there's more of them.

Thanks. Well for both aspects it took me many years. Many birthdays, christmas presents, allowance and paychecks to get the parts collection I have, the knowhow was over a decade of working with these parts. Neither of them come overnight. If it's something you want you just have to work at it Jeremy.

Good to see an ice titan! Those axes are badass, the overall look is great and I especially like the icy parts you're using here.
I'm also from Finland and I love your usage of our words as names of your MOCsB-) (Cool)

Thank you. :D I'm glad you like it. Credit for the Finnish totally goes to Monarth Who is also Finnish.

I wanted something from around that region in Europe, and I didn't want to go with straight up Norse Mythology because they're not from that. Finnish was a perfect solution here because I've learned that you Fins love the cold, so it all worked out. I back and forthed with jesse about names until it clicked. I also just like referencing different cultures and mythologies in my MOCs. Reality provides the best kindling for fiction.

Oh Monarth, he's a great MOCer! Yeah some like the cold but some really don't(I don't hate cold and winter but summer is more my thing :D (Big Grin) ) And the thing that you like mythologies is cool. You are right, they can offer a good inspiration!

WOW!!! This guy is a beast! And he's even well articulated for a titan! Kind of odd weapon storage, though.

Thanks. Yeah I value articulation very much, that's why my MOCs are the way they are. A MOC that's visually impressive but doesn't really do anything or is super delicate doesn't interest me. But a MOC I can pic up, handle and articulate is fun. To me that's what Bionicle was always about, having this cool action figure that's super poseable. Then you take those parts and build your own thing like any other lego creation. I've always tried to keep that spirit of Bionicle present in my MOCs.

The thought process behind that was when he's not hurling his axes at someone's face, they're more decorative. He is a king after all and wants to be impressive. I initially wanted a more viking approch in that he'd carry his axes by slipping them between a belt, but they are too big and he was already fairly restricted in his articulation So I opted for this.

Thanks Greg. That's what I loved about the Frost Beast mask, it looked like he has a sadistic smile on his face, and that's been the main driving point of his character. That mask makes him look like a mean bastard who I wouldn't want to fuck with, so that's exactly what he is.
